On Monday, February 26, DIVExFabrika Cinemastan presents La Haine (Hate), a 1995 French film written, co-edited, and directed by Mathieu Kassovitz.
It is about three young friends and their struggle to live in the banlieues (suburbs) of Paris. They are full of rage – against the police, but ultimately against a society that has pushed them to the margins. Much of the film’s comedy as well as its social comment comes from the gang’s misadventures in central Paris, a world as distant and alien to them as America.
The film premiered at the Cannes film festival, where it was a huge critical success. It enjoyed a standing ovation. Kassovitz was awarded the Best Director prize at the festival. The film was ranked #32 in Empire magazine’s “The 100 Best Films of World Cinema”.
